The Shemitah and Blood Moons Hysteria

One of the biggest problems of the early church was that of the Judaizers who presented themselves to congregations as “experts” and began teaching believers that they should be under the Law of Moses, while believing in Christ. Their influence spread and it became a major problem, so much so that the Apostle Paul addressed it numerous times in most of Galatians, Hebrews, and parts of Romans and in his other letters.  One warning in Titus 1:14 was to, “avoid Jewish fables and commandments of men that turn away from the truth.” As in those days, the Judaizers are now at work in the Hebrew Roots movement and through other teachers who imply the old covenant is still in force. These false prophets use spooky claims of supernatural signs, based on time sequences and celestial bodies to support their positions. New Testament believers, however, understand that a new covenant has been given through Christ Jesus, based upon better promises and the old has faded away (Hebrews 8: 6,13).

Let’s look at messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn’s Shemitah. Jesus commanded that we call no man rabbi, so here is a red flag. Cahn says that God’s judgment on America has taken place and will continue to occur. This, I do not dispute.  In his explanation of the 7 year cycle based on the Old Testament year of rest on every 7th year, Cahn warns that calamities and economic collapses such as stock market crashes take place every seven years. His impressive videos depict stock market downturns beginning every 7 years and it does look convincing, that is, until one looks at a long term stock market chart. Cahn starts with 1973 and goes to 1980, but a major market correction did not happen in 1980. I remember distinctively the crash of 1987, however, 1994 was nestled within a long term bull market. If we go to 2007, which was the start of the last bear market, then shouldn’t 2014 have been the next year of collapse? By backtracking, anyone can pick a number and find a repeatable pattern, but only for a limited period of time. Then the pattern disappears. If one studies years of stock market troughs, there is no 7 year pattern at all.

It is disappointing that so many high profile ministries wholeheartedly support Cahn’s claims without exercising a little due diligence. Of course, after a six year bull market, we should expect an imminent, major bond and equities market correction. The cause of the crash will not be the Shemitah 7 year rest ordinance, haunting us from the Torah, for that has been nailed to the cross (Colossians 2:14). What Cahn blatantly fails to mention is that modern booms and busts are created by unsound monetary policies stemming from the Federal Reserve Bank, that is primarily controlled by Jews (Greenspan-Bernanke-Yellen) and international banks. Asset bubbles always pop. They grow from easy monetary policies and the creation of fiat money out of thin air, setting the stage for the next crash. Another concern may be the changing demographic-spending patterns of consumers, according to Harry Dent. If Cahn is right and the Shemitah is to be feared, then the subtle implication is that the ordinances of the Mosaic Law still have power and should be observed. This would be heretical to New Testament Christians.
Let’s now look at Mark Biltz’s Blood Moon prophecy, adopted by John Hagee. Biltz is a messianic-Jewish pastor of a Hebrew Roots church. He bases his teaching on Joel 2:31 where it says, “The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.” Biltz focuses on lunar “tetrads” in which 4 lunar eclipses take place within a short period, like two years. He says these lunar eclipse tetrads occur during times of significance to the state or people of Israel. Unfortunately, the timing of the tetrads don’t accurately line up with the important events he cites, in fact are sometime later, but who’s looking? Two other tetrads have had no significance. In truth, the scriptures on which Biltz bases his teaching are talking about far more important events than just lunar eclipses and market corrections, which are common; furthermore, tetrads are not even mentioned in the Bible. In Joel 2:10,31 / Ezekiel 32: 7-8 / Acts 2:30 and Matthew 24:29 it says the sun AND moon shall be darkened AND the stars shall not give their light, simultaneously! So, it is not a momentary eclipse. Oh, and there’s an earthquake. These terrifying events coincide with the coming of the Lord Jesus in power and glory, not to questionable correlations to the Spanish Inquisition or the 1967 Israeli war. I perceive the Blood Moon theory is being promoted to conjure unquestioned Christian support for all things Israel, including its policies of aggression toward its neighbors and the apartheid state regarding Palestinians.
