Socialism: the Devil’s Counterfeit

September 2, 2013

By John K Rooney

During a protest in Charlottesville a couple of years ago, I had an interesting conversation with a certain professor. In our interaction he had ventured to say that Jesus was a communist. As it turns out, not a few people agree with his assessment, despite the fact that the most infamous figures in communism (socialism) have been atheists and have worked to eradicate Christianity altogether.

How many misguided Americans have given God thanks upon hearing that they qualified for Medicaid, Welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing or some other benefit derived from forced redistribution of income. After all, the money is confiscated from productive citizens, conceptually, at the point of a gun on the fear of imprisonment or worse. Often, these benefits are given to folks who are sitting around watching Jerry Springer and planning for their next “partay.”

Many believe that the social programs are the work of God in bringing equality and social justice to those less fortunate but the Bible says quite the contrary. II Thessalonians 3:10 contains a command that says, “If any will not work, neither should he eat.” I can tell you most assuredly, the gastric organ is a superb motivator. No, it is not cruel, for it takes months of starvation to bring about death. God’s word is strong on this issue because the expectation of a free ride is immoral. Takers know they are “ripping off” other hard-working citizens through the actions of corrupt politicians and the police power. This low-grade criminal mindset expands into other areas and to the children, resulting in divers crimes. Fortunately, there are jobs available to those who will work, however, few Americans are willing to do physical labor, especially when they can get a check for being slothful.

Some justify receiving the government’s “stolen” money on the basis of social justice. Many blacks are convinced, for example, that society and the white population still owes them a debt from the days of slavery when their ancestors were cruelly mistreated by slave masters. It is this refusal to forgive and move on that has become a vicious snare to the black community and enslaved millions under the bondage of socialist programs. We can see the working of Satan behind these traps, in which money and benefits are doled out, as long as the husband is not in the home. Don’t believe for one moment the destruction of African American families through “Great Society” handouts is an “unintended consequence.” If they were unintended, these programs would be abolished.  What does the Bible say regarding the notion that we should pay for the sins of slave-owners who lived 150 years ago?  Ezekiel 18:20 says, “… The son shall not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity … the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.”  Therefore, we are not responsible for the crimes and injustices of past generations, only that we do not repeat them.

The aforementioned professor alluded to the practice of the early church in which those who owned property and wealth distributed to those who had need. This is undoubtedly a very interesting passage, furthermore, it is a lovely example of the body of Christ functioning as intended.  Acts Chapters 4-5 illustrate how the church, through a great measure of grace, redistributed resources to their needy.  The shock came when Ananias and Sapphira, while giving in an offering, held back part of the purchase price (from a house they sold) resulting in their being struck dead by God’s judgement.  First of all, it was God who brought judgement, not a Soviet commissar, the IRS, SWAT, gun, gulag, or sword.  Second, holding back part of the money did not bring death, it was the fact that they conspired and lied about how much they gave, saying it was the full purchase price.  Then in Chapter 5 verse 4 we take note of what Peter said, “While it remained was it not thine own? And after it was sold was it not in thine own power?”  Hence, the Apostle Peter affirmed that Ananias and his wife exercised free-will over their property, that force was not approved in the early church regarding giving.  This is confirmed in  II Corinthians 9:7 where is says,”Every man as he purposes in his heart, let him give willingly, not grudgingly, nor of necessity for God loves a cheerful giver.”

In socialism, the state assumes power over property rights and uses coercion, fear and violence to confiscate and redistribute. It is Satan’s counterfeit to God’s kingdom of free-will sharing and receiving.

When an individual willingly gives toward a need, the recipient usually appreciates the gift and the giver. The giver is blessed in that he has done a good deed and obeyed the command of Christ to share his wealth. As times change, those who lacked may be the very ones who’s future abundance provides for the needs of those who previously gave (II Corinthians 8: 12-15). This ebb and flow of abundance and need creates opportunities for generosity and blessings both ways, thus allowing the mortar of love to strengthen the living temple of God. Socialism short circuits this vital operation as the collectivist machine takes over more and more of the distribution process. Forced giving through taxes and government programs becomes a drudgery and the those receiving aid are grateful to the politicians, not the real donors. Government has nothing, except what it takes from others. Organic giving is also more efficient than centralized redistribution. Individual donors are more likely to discern if needs are authentic than a bureaucratic system, plus, when the state acts as the middleman, the system siphons off vast amounts of precious resources. People who receive help from individuals not only get help faster, they are more apt to seek self-sufficiency than those on social programs. Government aid bestows false dignity to non-producers and this is a form of corrupting flattery. The natural order as prescribed by God and nature gives dignity to those possessing a strong work ethic and the willingness to share.

At the core of socialism is the goal of usurping God’s authority and undermining His influence on earth. It also weakens the natural safety net and influence of families. Socialism destabilizes society and upends order, creating opportunities for despots to seize liberty and establish rule with a rod of iron. History clearly shows, all countries that come under the full yoke of socialism, experience a veritable hell on earth. Socialists in various countries murdered 250+ million of their own people during the 20th Century. How many have already died in the US as a result of Marxist policies? It’s deceptive influence is spreading here in the US, for example, a war could do less damage to our inner cities than what social programs have wrought. The destruction of the family is well underway. Can you measure the grief and heartache endured by millions from the war on the family?

Trust in God is being supplanted by trust in the state. God is able and willing to provide for the needs of all who trust and follow Him, but the Devil, through his deceitful counterfeit, aims to replace God by being the provider, savior and nanny of all. The purveyors of this false religion are participating in an age old power-trip, with a familiar destination. We’ve all heard about that famous road that is paved with good intentions.
