Wipe Israel off the Map, Really?

January 15, 2012

Comment:  Please forward this information to your friends and e-mail lists.  It identifies another gigantic lie meant to get us entangled in what could be a catastrophic war.  Please call your legislators and tell them you strongly oppose an Iranian conflict and sanctions that are a form of economic war.

Is it true?  We’ve heard so many times that Iran’s President Ahmadinejad threatened to “Wipe Israel off the map.”  Politicians, top Christian leaders,  and pundits present the nightmare of a second Holocaust using these words.  Since this alleged statement is fueling arguments for pre-emptive war against yet another oil rich nation, how about some due diligence to determine whether the fear-mongering is merely more war propaganda.

Jonathan Steele from the Guardian (London), in his June 14th, 2006 article “Lost in Translation,” wrote that the Iranian president did not call for Israel to be “wiped off the map.”  Steele said the phrase had been “seized upon by Western and Israeli hawks to re-double suspicions of the Iranian government’s intentions.”  According to Steele and other experts, the accurate translation is, “the Imam said the regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time.”  The saying was actually a quote from the late Ayatollah Khomeini and represented an existing belief regarding political Zionism, not a call for genocide.  Many Jews also disagree with ideology of Zionism.

Ahmadinejad’s speech cited as examples the fall of both, the Soviet Union and the Shaw’s regime, each occurring without ethnic cleansing.  Additionally, the president called for democracy, by allowing the Palestinian people to express their views for the cause of durable peace.

But, we are told Iran is crazy?  Being different does not indicate madness.  Persia has not started a war in a long time; incidentally, how many foreign conflicts have we engaged?  Our CIA overthrew Iran’s Prime Minister Mossadegh in 1953 after he nationalized Iran’s oil, replacing him with the brutal Shaw.  Hence, the Islamic revolt.  And some boast, “Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.”
